What to Expect on the Water

Our morning charters kick off bright and early at 7 AM, giving you prime time on the water when the fish are most active. You'll spend four solid hours exploring the rich estuaries, grass flats, and oyster reefs that make Port O'Connor a world-class inshore fishing destination. The shallow-draft boat can access those secret spots where the big ones hide, and with room for up to four anglers, there's plenty of opportunity for everyone to hook into something special. Just keep in mind, if you've got a bigger group of 5 or 6, things might get a bit cozy on deck - perfect for families with kids, but grown-ups might need to take turns at the rail.

Live bait can often be the ticket to success, and while it's not included in the base price, it's usually available for purchase. Just ask your captain what's working best that day. We'll show you the ropes on everything from setting the hook to working a popping cork, so even if you're new to fishing, you'll be casting like a pro in no time.

Why Anglers Keep Coming Back

"We couldn't have asked for a better trip. The weather was great. Stephan was awesome. Got us to a nice spot where we could catch fish without having to relocate constantly. Thanks for a great morning." - Michael

Species You'll Want to Hook

Speckled Trout: These spotted beauties are a staple of Texas inshore fishing. Known for their delicate taste and challenging fight, speckled trout love to hang around grass beds and drop-offs. We often target them with soft plastics or live shrimp under a popping cork. The best part? They school up, so when you find one, you've usually found a bunch.

Redfish: Also called red drum, these copper-colored bruisers are the bulldogs of the flats. They'll test your drag and your patience with powerful runs. Look for their distinctive tail breaking the surface as they root for crabs in shallow water. We often sight-cast to these guys, making for some of the most exciting fishing you'll ever experience.

Black Drum: Don't let their ugly mugs fool you - black drum are both fun to catch and delicious on the plate. These bottom-feeders love structure and can often be found around oyster reefs and pier pilings. They're suckers for fresh crab or shrimp and put up a great fight on light tackle.

Southern Flounder: Masters of camouflage, flounder lie in wait to ambush their prey. We target these flatfish along channel edges and around structure, often using live bait or soft plastics bounced slowly along the bottom. They're not the hardest fighters, but they're considered some of the best eating fish in the bay.

Sheepshead: With their distinctive black and white stripes and impressive set of chompers, sheepshead are a unique catch. They're notorious bait stealers, making them a challenge to hook, but well worth the effort. We find them around structures like jetties and pilings, where they feed on barnacles and crustaceans.

Top Catches This Season

Port O'Connor's inshore waters are teeming with life year-round, but each season brings its own highlights. In spring and fall, the speckled trout bite is often on fire, with fish moving into the shallows to feed. Summer can be prime time for redfish, especially early mornings when they're tailing in skinny water. Winter might slow things down a bit, but it's also when you can tangle with some of the biggest trout of the year. No matter when you visit, there's always something pulling on the end of the line.

Navigating the Inshore Waters

Port O'Connor's maze of bays, channels, and backwaters can be tricky to navigate, but that's where our local knowledge comes in handy. We know these waters like the back of our hand, from the grass flats of Espiritu Santo Bay to the oyster reefs of San Antonio Bay. Keep an eye out for birds working the surface - that's often a dead giveaway for feeding fish below. And while we love to put you on the fish, we also prioritize safety. On those rare foggy mornings, we might need to adjust our plans a bit, but rest assured, we'll make the most of our time on the water.

What Sets Us Apart

At Mid Coast Outfitters POC, we're not just about catching fish - we're about creating memories. Our captains are all locals who've spent countless hours on these waters. They're not only skilled anglers but also patient teachers and storytellers. Whether you're looking to learn new techniques or just want to relax and reel in dinner, we've got you covered. And let's be honest, there's nothing quite like the satisfaction of bringing home a cooler full of fresh fish for the family fish fry.

Learn more about the species

Black Drum

Black Drum are the heavyweights of the drum family, typically 5-30 pounds but can hit 90 pounds. Look for them in brackish waters, especially around oyster beds and mudflats. They use their strong teeth to crush shellfish, so that's your clue to where they're feeding. Spring is prime time as they school up to spawn, making them easier to target. Anglers love the challenge of their powerful fight and the tasty meat of smaller ones (under 15 pounds is best eating). To land a Black Drum, use fresh crab or shrimp as bait. Here's a tip: fish on the bottom and be patient. These guys are notorious bait-stealers, so wait until you feel the weight of the fish before setting the hook. The "drumming" sound they make is a dead giveaway – listen for it to locate a school.

Black Drum

Redfish

Redfish, or Red Drum, are the bulldogs of inshore fishing. They're easily spotted by their copper color and black tail spot. Most inshore reds run 20-30 inches, but they can grow much larger. You'll find them in shallow waters, often tailing in 1-3 feet of water around oyster bars and grass flats. They're year-round targets but especially fun in fall when they school up. Anglers love Redfish for their powerful fights and excellent table fare. To catch one, try sight-fishing with gold spoons or soft plastics. Live bait like mullet or crabs works great too. Here's a local trick: look for nervous water or "pushes" – that's often a sign of feeding Redfish. When you spot one, cast well ahead of the fish and slowly retrieve your lure. The explosion when a Red hits a topwater lure is something you won't forget!

Redfish

Sea Trout

Sea Trout, also known as Speckled Trout, are a favorite among inshore anglers. These silvery, spotted fish typically run 14-24 inches and 1-5 pounds. You'll find them in grass flats and shallow waters, especially at night. They're most active in cooler months when they school up in deeper channels. Anglers love their aggressive strikes and tasty, flaky meat. To catch Sea Trout, try using artificial lures like jerk baits or topwater plugs. Live shrimp or small baitfish work well too. Here's a tip: when the water's cold, slow down your retrieve. These fish get sluggish in winter and won't chase fast-moving lures. Listen for their distinctive "pop" when they're feeding on the surface – that's your cue to cast nearby. Remember, they have soft mouths, so set the hook gently to avoid tearing it.

Sea Trout

Sheepshead

Sheepshead, or "convict fish" for their distinctive black stripes, are the tricksters of inshore fishing. Usually 1-8 pounds, they hang around structures like docks, bridges, and reefs. These fish are famous for their human-like teeth, which they use to crush barnacles and crabs. Spring's the best time to catch them as they gather to spawn. Anglers love the challenge – Sheepshead are notorious bait-stealers and require finesse to hook. Their white, sweet meat makes for excellent table fare too. To catch one, use light tackle and small hooks. Fresh shrimp or fiddler crabs work great as bait. Here's a local secret: when you feel a nibble, don't set the hook right away. Count to three, then give it a sharp tug. This gives the Sheepshead time to get the bait in its mouth, improving your chances of a solid hookup.

Sheepshead

Southern Flounder

These flat, oval fish are masters of camouflage, blending in with sandy or muddy bottoms. Usually 15-18 inches long, they can grow up to 33 inches. You'll find them in shallow coastal waters, bays, and estuaries. Southern Flounder are ambush predators, lying in wait for smaller fish and crustaceans. They're most active in fall as they move to deeper waters to spawn. Anglers love targeting them for their delicate, white meat and the challenge of spotting them. To catch one, try still fishing or drifting with live bait or artificial lures near the bottom. Use a light-to-medium line and be ready for a subtle bite. Here's a local trick: look for slight depressions in the sand – that's often where flounder are hiding. When you feel a bite, wait a few seconds before setting the hook to make sure the fish has the bait fully in its mouth.
